Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University Libraries at the Virginia State University seeks a visionary Associate Librarian for Special Collections and Archives who will oversee all aspects of the Special Collections and Archives department on the campus of Virginia State University.

This role will have the following duties and responsibilities:

• Serves as the head of the Special Collections and Archives and oversees daily operations of the department. Makes recommendations to the Dean on department budget, staff, and other operational needs. 
• Develops programs and services to acquire, process, curate, and provide access to special collections in a variety of formats.
• Facilitates discovery of and access to collection information through the development of EAD finding aids, the library website, and other avenues.
• Provides leadership on issues surrounding collection access and digitization in collaboration with relevant Library stakeholders.
• Takes responsibility for promoting and interpreting unique collections through innovative and engaging physical and digital exhibitions, educational programming and instruction, and social media.
• Assists with grant development.
• Creates a sustainable program to support born-digital archives.
• Actively participates in library, university and/or professional-level service commitments directly related to the field of special collections, digitization, or academic librarianship.  


Minimum Qualifications

The following MINIMUM requirements MUST be demonstrated to be considered:

ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library/Information Studies with an emphasis on formal archival education or training; or a Master’s degree in American History, African American Studies, or other relevant discipline with experience in archives, archival coursework, or archival certificate.
Supervisory experience and at least two years of professional archives experience. Demonstrated ability in evaluating, selecting, and processing rare and special collections. Knowledge of best practices and national standards such as EAD, DACS, MARC, and Dublin Core.
Knowledge of preservation principles; and demonstrated ability and initiative in instruction and outreach.
Proficient in MS Office Suite.
Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively; and evidence of commitment to public service.
Must be available to work an occasional evening and weekend schedule.

Additional Considerations:

Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists. Experience with ArchivesSpace (or Archon, Archivists Toolkit and Aeon). Experience working with web Archives and digital repositories. Evidence of successful project management and grant writing experience; and coursework in Virginia state history with emphasis on African American history and culture.
